Leadership Moment--Episode One: The Phantom Menace…I Mean…Collaborative Leaders

2/5/2018

You can tell a good boss by how they treat other people.  A good boss will stand up for you, trust you, listen, and tell you the honest truth.

What is a collaborative leader?
  • They believe power is GREATEST in a collective TEAM
  • They openly SHARE information and knowledge
  • They encourage SUGGESTIONS and IDEAS from their TEAM
  • They facilitate BRAINSTORMING with their TEAM
  • They enable their TEAM by allocating their time and resources well
  • They allow roles and responsibilities to EVOLVE and FLUCTUATE
  • They seek to uncover the ROOT CAUSE of issues
  • They offer IMMEDIATE and ONGOING feedback and personalized COACHING

Being a collaborate leader means empowering your TEAM to work as just that, a TEAM.  With every conversation you should ask yourself the following questions:  “Did I approach this interaction with an open point of view?” “Is there a way for this interaction to add value to our organization?”  “Is there a way for this interaction to empower both parties?”  If you answer yes to all of these, you are thinking like a collaborate leader.

Currently Working On...
I am the Director of Emergency Medical Services at the Center for Patient Safety and the Sr. Vice President for the Baltimore County Volunteer Firefighters Association.

About Me

As the Director of Emergency Medical Services at the Center for Patient Safety, I work with a diverse cohort of EMS agencies across the country to collect patient safety data and improve Just Culture in an effort to reduce the risk of patient harm.

I have experience overseeing the coordination, oversight, and regulation of Emergency Medical Services operations, education, and emergency care in the Nation's Capital. I have more than ten years of experience as a EMS clinician, instructor, and leader in various pre-hospital and public health settings, including volunteer and paid organizations, academic institutions, and emergency response incident management teams.

My core competencies include building and leading functional teams, coordinating stakeholders, managing projects and programs, transforming organizations, and ensuring quality and compliance in EMS and healthcare delivery. I am passionate about advancing the field of EMS and public health through evidence-based practice, education, and innovation. I have developed and implemented updated policies and procedures in EMS education and protocols, resulting in improved outcomes and performance metrics. I have also contributed to the District's COVID-19 response as a Testing and Sampling Group Supervisor and the Deputy Health and Medical Branch Director, earning recognition and commendation for my service.
